This is a stand alone Track Sprints run with SOLO car classing for competition and Safety levels according to Time Trials rules. This is our first year with the Track Sprints on the track where we used to autocross. The event will run just like the autocross did, just no cones between Start and Finnish. It will be one car car at a time with no passing. Track Sprint is perfect for people who are new to track events or want to take a new-to-them car out on track for the first time. It's also a great way to learn the twistiest part of a track and earn experience toward a Time Trials license. If you've ever driven a spirited highway on- or off-ramp, Track Sprint is for you! If you're concerned about your daily driver, track insurance is available (consider Hagerty or Lockton). You can enter a SCCA Time Trial event as a Weekend Member, which will trigger a temporary Novice License that will allow you to participate.
What kind of equipment do I need?
You do NOT need a transponder, any fancy equipment, or a race car. In fact, Western Michigan Region Track Sprint events are perfect for street-legal vehicles that are licensed, plated, and insured for the street.
- You need a car that is safe to drive on track. Have your car looked over by a qualified mechanic who can complete this WMR Tech Form.pdf.
- Convertibles must meet or exceed the necessary roll-over protection; see "Requirements" below for more info. For safety reasons, most HCG vehicles (high center of gravity) are not allowed.
- You need a helmet with a current competition rating from Snell, SFI, or the FIA; you can see the approved helmet list here (click here for temporary link). Helmets with only a DOT (highway) rating are inadequate for track use and will not be accepted. A limited number of free helmets are available for loan from SCCA during the event on a first-come, first-served basis.
- You need BIG NUMBERS on both sides of your car. To make sure they are readable at speed and from a distance, these numbers should be at least 8 inches tall, in a color that contrasts with your car's exterior. You can select your number during online registration and finalize it at the event. We will most likely have painters' tape available if you don't have your own numbers. We recommend putting temporary numbers on after you arrive at the track!
- You will need pants while on track and closed-toe shoes. Shirts may be long- or short-sleeved. Cotton materials are preferred to synthetics.

Event Requirements
- NATIONAL EVENT SAFETY RULES
For National SCCA Events, the Vehicle and Driver Equipment Safety Rules are as follows, with descriptions of each level below:
- Sport, Tuner and Max categories must meet Safety Level 1.
- Production vehicles prepped within Sport Category allowances on aftermarket (non-OE) D.O.T. approved tires with a UTQG rating of 100-199 may meet Safety Level 1 and will be classed in Unlimited Category.
- Unlimited-category vehicles on D.O.T. approved tires with a UTQG rating of 200 or higher any must meet Safety Level 1.
- Unlimited-category vehicles prepped beyond Sport Category allowances and on D.O.T. approved tires with a UTQG rating of less than 200 or any vehicle on D.O.T. tires with a UTQG rating of less than 100 must meet Safety Level 2.
- Unlimited vehicles on non-D.O.T. tires must meet Safety Level 3.
- Ask us for a determination for your safety level if it's unclear to you too. We will work on making diffinitive solo class requirement for safety levels. If you level up in your compitition class while your car isn't changed, you don't need to meet the higher safety level. For example if you run your FS car in CP to get a trophy, it's safety level is still 1.
- Safety
- This event will follow SCCA Time Trials safety level gear and car requirements. These can be found in the Time Trials section of SCCA.com.
- A helmet meeting current certifications (CLICK TEMPORARY LINK HERE), pants, and closed-toed shoes are required for drivers.
- Vehicle Eligibility
- Has at least four (4) wheels, grouped in equal sets of half of the wheels on the vehicle per side, six (6) if you are running a crewcab dually
- Must fit into the Safety Triangle for stability, height must be less than the average track width measured from the center of the tires
- Must be under 100?db at 50? foot
- Convertibles and Safety
- It is highly recommended that all convertible vehicles be equipped with an aftermarket roll bar that meets or exceeds the standards set in the Time Trials Safety Standard Level 2 (see those standards here).
- However, minimum safety standard requires the vehicle meets at least one of the following criteria and is not subject to any of the listed exceptions:
- 1. Convertible vehicles up to and including the 2005 model year must have rollover protection meeting one of the following criteria:
- A. The vehicle is equipped with documented factory installed roll over protection. (Examples of manufacturer-documented roll over protection include hydroformed and reinforced a-pillars or windshield frame and factory installed roll bars and/or “pop-up” bars that are designated as roll over protection.)
- B. The vehicle is equipped with a commercially produced roll bar or roll cage which is described by the manufacturer to provide track-appropriate rollover protection. (E.g., “style” bars are not acceptable.)
- 1. Braces and portions of the main hoop subject to contact by the driver’s or passenger’s helmet, as seated normally and restrained by seatbelt and harness, must be padded with a non-resilient material such as Ethafoam® or Ensolite® or other similar material with a minimum thickness of 1/2 inch. Padding meeting SFI spec 45.1 or FIA 8857-2001 is strongly recommended.
- C. The vehicle is equipped with a roll bar that meets the Safety Level 2 standards for material and construction.
- 2. Convertible vehicles of the 2006 model year or later must have a roll bar that meets the Safety Level 2 standards for material and construction unless one of the following criteria is met.
- A. The vehicle is equipped with documented factory-installed roll over protection or a commercially produced roll bar or roll cage which is described by the manufacturer to provide track-appropriate rollover protection.
- B. The vehicle is six (6) cylinders, with the OE drivetrain and may only be naturally aspirated.
- C. The vehicle is four (4) cylinders or less, with the OE drivetrain, including any forced-induction equipment.
- Note: This means that for 2006+ vehicles, if the engine is not the original equipment model as delivered in that vehicle, aftermarket forced induction has been installed, or the vehicle has more than six (6) cylinders or six (6) cylinders and forced induction of any type, the vehicle must have aftermarket rollover protection or documented factory rollover protection.

Motorsports are inherently dangerous. These Rules are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to participants, spectators or others. You can reduce risk by driving well, properly using superior safety gear, paying attention, and reporting unsatisfactory issues to the event officials. Drivers are responsible for ensuring that the vehicle being used is properly prepared for operation under elevated acceleration, braking and cornering forces. Drivers must have a Technical Inspection (Tech) Sheet completed and available to present to an SCCA Official.
